Fare Increase, Lottery, Staying Up Late And Queuing, This Is How Chinese Cars Are Treated Abroad

Dec 10, 2022

How popular can a domestic car be in foreign countries? I believe this is a topic that has interested countless Chinese people, and recently BYD Yuan PLUS has answered this question with its strength.

In the domestic consumer market, there are often some follow-up buying phenomena, ranging from queuing up to buy milk tea to scalpers queuing up all night to snap up new versions of Apple phones. There are too many such scenes. Will products made in China be so popular overseas? In fact, most of the time, they won’t, but recently BYD has taught domestic consumers a lesson. BYD, which opened a store in Thailand, suffered from Apple’s treatment. A large number of scalpers and consumers stayed up late and queued up to get BYD’s lottery qualification. The BYD ATTO3 they snapped up is actually the BYD Yuan plus that many domestic consumers look down on.

On November 1, the right-hand drive version of BYD Yuan PLUS (called ATTO3 overseas) began to accept reservations in Thailand. On the day of booking, it was warmly welcomed by Thai consumers. In some areas, there was even a grand scene of queuing up to order in the middle of the night, which even triggered reports from many Thai media.

The Thai man sitting on the chair in the above picture is the customer who went to BYD 4S store to order ATTO3. The price of this car in Thailand is 1.199 million baht, or about 226,000 yuan, which is almost 30% more expensive than the domestic price.

Judging from media interviews with Thai consumers, the reason why this car is so popular there is also very simple. Since Thailand also needs to import a large amount of oil, the oil price is very high. A liter of oil is about 50 baht, or about 9.6 yuan. This has led to a further increase in the cost of using traditional fuel vehicles.

Not only that, in the Thai market, due to the underdeveloped electric vehicle manufacturing industry, there are not many cheap and reliable electric vehicle options, and BYD ATTO3 is one of them.

Compared with the price of Tesla model3 as high as 500,000 yuan per unit, BYD ATTO3 is already very cost-effective. Since Thailand is in the tropics, the annual minimum temperature is above 20 degrees Celsius, so there is no problem of battery performance degradation caused by low temperature, so the shortcomings of lithium iron phosphate batteries are reduced here, and the cruising range is further extended.

A local auto media in Thailand said that behind BYD's popularity may be the beginning of the decline in sales of Japanese cars. If Japanese cars do not take measures to adjust the proportion of electrified models, the problem of sales decline will become more serious.
